About ERA.Net RUS Plus

Cooperation in innovation, research and development is a key dimension in the relations between the European Union and Russia. In this context the 28 consortium members of ERA.Net RUS Plus implemented 2 Joint Calls for transnational and scientifically excellent research projects in 2014 and 2017. Both were execeptionally successful. In 2018, the European Comission decided to extend the project period of ERA.Net RUS Plus until October 2019. The current 3rd Joint Call is a cooperation of the involved funding parties independent of additional EU funding.

1st Joint Call (2014 / 2015)

The ERA.Net RUS Plus Group of Funding Parties selected 18 projects for 'Innovation' and 45 projects for 'Science & Technology' with a national financial volume of EUR 20 million for funding including a topping-up from the EU of EUR 3.5 million. The Joint Call Secretariat (JCS) received almost 300 project proposals, a huge response to the Joint Calls 2014. The ERA.Net RUS Plus became not only the largest geographical ERA.NET, but also a flagship and leading initiative in the EU-Russia science cooperation. Learn more...

2nd Joint Call (2017 / 2018)

In April 2018, the funding organisations of the ERA.Net RUS Plus Calls 2017 selected 7 'Innovation' projects for funding with a financial volume of EUR 3 million. With the 28 projects for 'Science & Technology' selected in November 2017, in total 35 joint research projects will be carried out between 2018 and 2021 with a total funding volume of EUR 14 million. 3rd Joint Call (2019 / 2020)

After an extension of its project period by the European Comission, ERA.Net RUS Plus ran until October 2019. The project extension facilitated the preparation of a third joint call, as the praticipating research and innovation funding organisations had decided to continue this extremely successful joint initiative by launching another call round independent of additional EU funding. The ERA.Net RUS Plus 3rd Joint Call continues the support of S&T Projects in the fields of Nanotechnologies, Health, Social Sciences & Humanities and Robotics. Learn more...

  • Project Objectives

The major objective of the ERA.Net RUS Plus initiative, which ended in October 2019, was to deepen the transnational collaboration between EU MS/AC and Russia and to reduce the fragmentation of research programmes along national funding lines. This joint undertaking was meant to create synergies and strengthen the cooperation among the consortium members.

  • Project Structure

The ERA.Net RUS Plus initiative defined four Work Packages (WPs) to organise its activities. Each of these WPs was supervised by a Work Package leader from the ERA.Net RUS Plus consortium and all partners contributed to a set number of Tasks within the Work Packages.

  • The ERA-NET Scheme

The objective of the ERA-NET scheme, which was launched in 2002 under the European Commission's 6th Framework Programme for Research and Development (FP6), was to enhance coordination of national or regional research programmes in the Member States and Associated Countries. The scheme has significantly contributed to structuring the European Research Area by favouring actions jointly supported by several Member States/Associated Countries and the Commission (such as joint calls, joint programmes, etc.).
